LANSDOWNE, PA, July 12, 2007—Under the summer skies the renowned Commonwealth Classic Theatre Company is presenting its latest production on Lansdowne's Twentieth Century Club front lawn. "The Game of Love and Chance" by Pierre Marivaux promises laughter and romance in a delicious comedy of manners. Scheduled for Thursday, July 26th at 7 pm, this free Theatre in the Parks program highlights Lansdowne's continuing commitment to arts and culture.
"As always, in bringing classical plays to contemporary audiences we emphasize the relevance of the plays to our audience," says Mary Ann Baldwin, producing artistic director, Commonwealth Classic Theatre Company, Media, PA. Set in the 1920s, this comedy focuses on a sense of impending social and societal change and accentuates class differences, while providing the sparks of energy, color, and liveliness demanded by outdoor theatre performing. "Also, the 1920's style of dress is far more comfortable to our actors then courtly wear from the 1700's. Summers in the 21st Century are brutal!" jokes Baldwin.
"The Game of Love and Chance," with its familiar characters and other elements of traditional Commedia Dell'arte, lends itself to a bold and exciting outdoor production. "I have trained in the physical and improvisational style of the Commedia Dell'arte and this focus on the physical aspect of the acting in our production will help balance our usual emphasis on the spoken language of the text," says Aaron Cromie, director, Commonwealth Classic Theatre Company, Media, PA.
"This particular play was chosen, basically, because it is funny," says Baldwin. "But I also loved it for Marivaux's wit and sharp, insightful comic observations and wry understanding of the human heart." For directions to the Twentieth Century Club at 84 S. Lansdowne Ave., please call 610.220.1385. The raindate for this outdoor production is scheduled for Friday, July 27th.
