I hope this finds everyone well as we continue to deal with these unsettling times. With that said I urge everyone to continue to practice social distancing and wearing a mask. Things are slowly getting better but we can’t let our guard down. Also I would like to ask anyone who has not filled out the 2020 Census to please do so. The deadline is September 30th. This is important for Lansdowne for many reasons. After what we have gone through this year we can not afford to lose any federal funds due to a low count.
As Mayor I want to take this time to thank our police Chief, Dan Donegan, for all he has done over the years for our Lansdowne residents. Chief Donegan is retiring at the end of this month. The Chief is going out on medical disability. The Chief has been with the Borough since 1997. He moved up through the department as a Patrol Officer, Criminal Investigator, Sergeant and then as Police Chief in 2013. Over these years he has worked closely with our residents, businesses, churches, and schools always willing to listen and help out. As Mayor it has been an honor and a privilege to serve with Chief Donegan for the past seven years. He has helped make my job as Mayor more productive and enjoyable. The Chief has always conducted himself and managed the police department with professionalism, integrity and respect. He has lead and developed a police department that we all should be proud of. He will be missed and I wish him all the best going forward. If you get a chance, reach out between now and September 30th and tell the Chief thank you for a job well done.
I look forward to working with Sergeant Kenny Rutherford who we have appointed interim Police Chief while we conduct a new hiring search. Sergeant Rutherford has been serving as one of our detectives. I feel he will do a fine job and will continue the culture of fine police work that Chief Donegan set in place over the years.
There are two events that are coming up I want to tell you about. First is our paper shredding event on Saturday October 17th 9:00 to 12:00 at the Highland Ave parking lot. We are partnering with East Lansdowne Borough. Also Delaware County DA’s office will have a drop off truck there for expired prescription drugs. I want to thank the DA’s office for helping with the cost of this event.
Unfortunately with the way things are we don’t think it would be wise to have our kids Halloween parade and party like we have done in the past. Instead we will have a scaled down version on Saturday October 31st 11:00 - 1:00 at the Landing. It will be held during the Farmers Market. We will have two tables set up and hand out trick or treat bags filled with goodies for the kids. This is for kids 1 to 10 years old and they must be accompanied by a parent. We will have safety precautions in place and ask everyone to wear a mask. There will be no judging for best costumes but I hope everyone will come and show off their Halloween spirt. We hope this will give the little ones some sense of normalcy. Hope to see you there.
Thank you. Be safe.
See you around town.
